Through our Visual Arts Survey course, students are introduced to a variety of artistic methods. Students will explore how the elements and principles of art are affected by varying techniques and materials. Using charcoal, aqua media (water color, gouache, and tempera), oil and acrylic paints, pastels, inks, textiles, clay and glazes, students will create original prints, sculpture, and mixed media. In addition, students will develop standards which they can use to judge a work of art, critically evaluating how the artist stirs emotions, creates a mood, and demonstrates virtuosity.

Studio Art is offered in two sections, Studio Art 1 and Studio Art 2. Studio Art 1 continues to build upon the elements and principles of art as they apply to 2D and 3D mediums. They explore a wide range of materials and techniques including charcoal, acrylic paint, prismacolor, hand building, paper mache and calligraphy.

Students in Studio Art 1 have the opportunity to participate in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Contest. In Studio Art 2, students focus on portfolio building and competition.

A variety of concepts and mediums will be explored that will challenge the student to think critically about his/her work. Artwork will include experiences in drawing, printmaking, oil on canvas, portrait/figure drawing, and coil and modeling with clay. Students will participate in competitions at the local and national level.

Graphic Design includes the study of professional graphic design techniques, allowing students to produce their own creative work. Principles of graphic design will be assessed, including layout, typefaces, image choice, formatting, and color schemes.

Students apply their knowledge of design elements as they develop individual pieces such as logo creation, posters, event programs, and album or book covers. The Frassati Catholic Graphic Design course uses industry-standard technology to create their work, gaining experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.

Our AP Art History course offers a chronological survey of Western art from the dawn of civilization to the present time, including the most modern trends and ideas in the ever changing world of art.

The first semester introduces the topic of art history, and covers art through the northern renaissance while the second semester includes the Italian renaissance through the present.

During the 2018-2019 school year, the AP Art History class visited the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston where they saw the Vincent van Gogh exhibit as well as works by famed artists including Rembrandt, Velázquez, Tintoretto, Picasso, and Dalí.
